Did You Know
The National Aging Resource Center on Elder Abuse (now the National Center on Elder Abuse) estimated that 820,000 elders became victims of elder abuse in 1994, excluding self-neglecting elders. Adding self-neglecting elders raised the number of victims to 1.86 million.

There are many legal problems that affect the elderly. It is important that

you find an attorney with a broad understanding of the laws that may have an impact on a given issue, for example:

  • Elder Abuse
  • Fraud
  • Medicaid
  • Medicare claims and appeals
  • Disability planning, including use of durable powers of attorney, living trusts, "living wills," for financial management and health care decisions.
  • Estate planning, including planning for the management of one's estate during life and its disposition on death through the use of trusts and wills.
  • and many more

Most elder law attorneys do not specialize in every one of these areas. So when an attorney says he/she practices Elder Law, find out which of these matters he/she handles.
